The world has been patiently watching the unfolding saga of the Chilean miners trapped in a mine. Chilean miners still alive. Nobody knew how or when they would be rescued though. Officials and advisers from NASA are dispatched to the site to offer any advice they can to the miners and rescue crews. It might take months to obtain them. A rescue shaft is being dug. It is taking way too long.
NASA arrives in Chile
The Chilean mine disaster now has National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials. The miners are contained 2,200 feet underground. National Aeronautics and Space Administration engineers and scientists are responsible for getting supplies to the miners. The only things that could be given to the men come through three four inch wide tubes, reports the Washington Post. This has to get supplies to 33 men. Oxygen goes down one tube, while the other two send supplies and video conference so families can see each other. The real concern is about the tube. How are they going to get supplies down a four inch tube?
Encouragement and advice
The Washington Post just lately conducted an interview with Jerry Linenger, a former NASA astronaut. Linenger was the sole American trapped aboard the Mir space station in 1997, when a fire trapped him and two cosmonaut colleagues in space for four months. Linenger’s advice to the men was that they have to stay busy, but not obtain their hopes up. If things do not go as well as they hope, the miners might end up with despair and depression. He explained that it is very important work as a team. There shouldn’t be any one person in charge of everything.
There is Camp Hope
There is a camp called Camp Hope near the mine. This is for all of the rescue workers, family members and support staff. Meanwhile, the mining business is begging for forgiveness and near bankruptcy. The company isn’t paying the stuck miners’ wages.
